Snow Day Joy

Joy was ours on Sunday as a winter storm blew in and the call went out that today would be a Snow Day! Joy, Joy, Joy! Instead of rushing about this morning we made an extra pot of coffee and I pulled on boots to walk out back. I tried to capture the sparkle on the frozen branches all flocked and glittered. It was quite magical looking.

David is set for the Arctic blast. Last week he admired this hat in the lunch line and the kid who was wearing it offered it to him for $5.00 of his lunch money. Hmmmm… not sure how I feel about that... and am just hoping the other mom wasn’t too upset about the “lost” hat.

I’ve always wanted an Advent garland of tiny mittens one for each day of December leading up Christmas but it seems I always think about it in December when there is no way there would be time to make something like that. Well this past weekend I squeezed in three tiny mittens using a pattern from the Winter 2000 issue of Interweave Knits. (It’s also in the 2006 issue of Interweave Knits Holiday Gifts) They were fun to make but making two-dozen is probably out of the question. The mitten pictured in my banner is also knit from this pattern and is Raveled here. http://www.ravelry.com/projects/fidlstix/miniature-mittens-and-stocking-ornaments

Speaking of mittens you need to check out the 9000 Hands Project for the NATO summit that was held in Latvia in 2006. Scroll down and click on the galleries. http://www.rigasummit.lv/en/id/cats/nid/698/ 4500 pairs of incredibly beautiful stranded color work mittens each as wonderfully individual as a snowflake. What a fun way to while away some snow bound time.

Those Latvian mittens are amazing! Thanks for sharing the link. My husband managed to download the file for me and now I have hundreds (thousands?) of gorgeous mittens to look at. Wow.

Wintery and pretty, we haven't had snow here yet. I've been wanting some sort of knitted advent too but don't have the time and will surely lose the urge on Dec.25th. Thanks for the Latvian mitten link!

I found the link to the mittens here http://jujulovespolkadots.typepad.com/
Check out Juju's latest mittens...they are beautiful! I'm working on some fingerless mitts inspired by them.

I love mittens! Aren't snow days wonderful? I miss that, now that I have no kids in the school system anymore. . .
